Prices of Fish and Chicken Drop After Eid, Vegetables Remain Stable

The prices of broiler chickens had risen sharply before Eid. However, after Eid, the prices have decreased again, making them affordable for middle-class and lower-middle-class consumers.

On Friday (March 27), visits to several markets in the capital—including Karwan Bazar, Mugda, Shewrapara, Kazipara, Jatrabari, Hatirpool, and Zigatola—revealed this scenario. It was observed that after Eid, broiler chicken is now being sold at Tk 190 per kg. Layer chicken is priced at Tk 320, Sonali chicken at Tk 360, and Pakistani chicken at Tk 390 per kg. Meanwhile, local (deshi) chicken is being sold between Tk 550 and Tk 700 per kg, depending on size.

At meat shops, beef is being sold at Tk 750 to Tk 850 per kg, while mutton is priced at Tk 1,000 per kg.

In the egg market, a dozen red eggs are being sold for Tk 110 to Tk 120, duck eggs at Tk 200 per dozen, local chicken eggs at Tk 100 per four (hali), and Sonali cock eggs at Tk 70 per hali.

In the vegetable market, green chilies are being sold at Tk 110 per kg, eggplant at Tk 60, pointed gourd at Tk 50, and bitter gourd and yardlong beans at Tk 60–70 depending on location. Carrots are priced at Tk 50, okra at Tk 80, and ridge gourd, sponge gourd, and snake gourd are available at Tk 60–80. Raw papaya is being sold at Tk 25–30 per kg. Sweet pumpkin costs Tk 40–50 per piece (depending on size), bottle gourd Tk 60 each, and cabbage and cauliflower Tk 50 each. Drumsticks (moringa pods) are being sold at Tk 120–140.

Additionally, local coriander leaves are priced at Tk 180 per kg, hybrid coriander at Tk 100–120, mint leaves at Tk 200 per kg, and green bananas at Tk 40 per four. Ash gourd costs Tk 50 per piece, and capsicum is being sold at Tk 100 per kg. Red spinach is Tk 10–15 per bunch, bottle gourd leaves Tk 20–30, water spinach Tk 20 for two bunches, Malabar spinach Tk 30, stem amaranth Tk 20 for two bunches, and spinach Tk 30 for two bunches.

Although potato prices have increased slightly, onion prices remain stable. Potatoes have risen by Tk 5 to Tk 25 per kg, while local onions are being sold at Tk 30–35 per kg.

In the fish market, rohu is being sold at Tk 350–450 per kg (depending on size), catla at Tk 340–480, tilapia at Tk 200–230, pangas at Tk 200–240, and farmed shing and magur fish at Tk 350–450, while local varieties cost Tk 750–850. Farmed koi fish are priced at Tk 240–280, while local koi costs Tk 750–850. Boal and chital fish are being sold at Tk 550–750 per kg.

Among other fish, small to medium-sized river shrimp are priced at Tk 850–1,200, kachki fish at Tk 350–400, mola fish at Tk 300–350, pabda fish at Tk 330–450 depending on size, and freshwater prawns (golda shrimp) at Tk 650–850 per kg. Hilsa weighing 300 grams is being sold at Tk 1,200–1,300 per kg, while 500-gram hilsa is priced at Tk 1,500–1,600 per kg.
