The United Nations Security Council is set to hold an emergency closed-door meeting to discuss the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the alleged attacks by the United States and Israel on civilian facilities in Iran.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. New York time on Friday (March 27).
According to diplomatic sources, Russia has called for this meeting. Moscow has alleged that in recent days, attacks have damaged important civilian infrastructure in Iran, including educational and healthcare facilities, which it claims is a violation of international law. The United States, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for March, has scheduled the meeting at Russia’s request.
It is mentioned that on March 11, the Security Council adopted a Bahrain-backed resolution (Resolution 2817), condemning Iran’s attacks on neighboring countries. However, the resolution made no mention of the U.S.-Israeli strikes inside Iran. Since then, Russia has been insisting that the Security Council should call on both sides to exercise restraint equally. In today’s closed-door meeting, Russia is expected to present evidence of the damage inside Iran and may propose a balanced ceasefire.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon has claimed that since the start of the conflict, U.S. forces have carried out strikes on more than 10,000 targets inside Iran.
Iran’s Ministry of Health has reported that since February 28, at least 1,937 people have been killed in U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran, with another 24,800 injured.
